The MRF is working to raise awareness and create support for the expansion of
recreational opportunities. To achieve these goals, we will advocate and raise funds for:
- Youth recreation scholarships
- Montrose Recreation District projects and programs
- Capital campaign to construct a Community Recreation Center
Physical activity has been shown to increase academic performance, decrease obesity, and increase self-esteem. Therefore, it is important that all children in our community have access to programs that promote physical activity. We wish to dramatically increase participation of children from low-income families in MRD recreation programs by increasing the amount of scholarships awarded each year. This year the
MRF raised $5,000 for the MRD scholarship fund. From these funds, $1000 was directed toward the Luis Estrada Swim Lesson Scholarship Fund to ensure that no one who needs swim lessons is turned away.
The cost of shoes and equipment to participate in recreation programs can be prohibitive to low-income families. To address this problem, the MRF and Montrose Recreational District collaborated this year to hold the first gear swap for youth recreation programs. The gear swap provides an opportunity for families to trade gear or to obtain gear for a small donation. The donations were contributed to the MRD
youth scholarship fund. The MRF and MRD will be seeking donations of sports equipment and shoes to ensure that anyone needing shoes and equipment can obtain them at the gear swaps.
Montrose Water Sports Park, River Trail and Field Renovation
The MRD is a major partner in the Montrose Water Sports Park, River Trail and Field Renovation Project. As an MRD partner, the MRF committed to raise $3,000 in community funding to support the Great Outdoor Colorado Grant application. A successful fundraiser was held in September and the funding has been secured.
